The thing that actually makes them worse

Squeezing. A pore wall that has been forced open stays stretched, and repeated enough it does not go back -- which is the one way to genuinely enlarge a pore rather than fill it. The blackheads on a nose are oxidised oil, not dirt, and they refill on a schedule set by the gland; extracting them by hand every week trades a clear afternoon for a permanently wider opening.

Sun damage widens them, quietly

Collagen is what holds the wall of a pore taut. UV breaks it down, the wall loses its spring, and pores on the cheeks in particular sag into little ovals rather than circles. This is why pores tend to look larger at forty than at twenty on the same face, and why sunscreen belongs on a pore page at all -- it is doing more for pore size over ten years than any pore product does in ten weeks.

Stripping the oil backfires

Harsh foaming cleansers and alcohol toners remove oil and the skin answers by making more, which is the loop a lot of oily skin is stuck in. A gentle cleanser plus an actual exfoliant beats a stripping cleanser plus nothing, every time. Tight and squeaky is not clean, it is over-cleansed.
