The answer
My face is oily by lunchtime
Skin does not suddenly make more oil at midday -- it makes it steadily, and four hours in there is enough on the surface to break up whatever is over it. So the fix comes in two halves. First, give the oil something to sit in rather than under: a primer that grips means makeup is not floating on a film by hour three. Second, set the places that actually go shiny rather than the whole face, because powder on a dry cheek causes a different problem you will also want solved. Blotting at noon and re-powdering only the T-zone beats a heavier morning routine.

Powdering the whole face is the usual mistake
Oil arrives in the T-zone -- forehead, nose, chin -- and rarely on the outer cheek. Powdering everything to solve the middle leaves the sides dry and flat by the afternoon, which reads as tired rather than shiny. Set the band down the centre of the face and stop there.
Blot before you powder, never after
Powder over existing oil turns to paste and sits in texture, which is why a midday touch-up sometimes looks worse than the shine did. Lift the oil off first with a tissue pressed flat, then put a thin layer of powder on the clean surface. Two steps, thirty seconds, and it is the difference between a fresh face and a caked one.
Stripping the skin makes the afternoon worse
A harsh cleanser and a skipped moisturiser both leave skin producing more rather than less, and dehydrated skin reads oilier because the oil sits on the surface instead of moving into it. A light moisturiser under makeup is counter-intuitive here, and it is the version most people have not tried.
Questions
- Are blotting papers better than powder?
- For the middle of the day, usually. They lift oil without adding anything, so nothing builds up over the hours. Powder after them if the finish still needs evening out.
- Does a mattifying foundation solve it on its own?
- It delays it rather than solving it, and it can look flat by evening. The primer-and-set approach is what changes how long an ordinary foundation lasts.
- Should I use a setting spray as well as powder?
- They do different jobs. Powder absorbs; a setting spray holds everything in place and takes the powdery look off the finish. Spray last, after everything else, or it disturbs what is under it.
