What goes under what
Most of what is written about lingerie is about being seen in it. Most evenings it is not about that at all — it is about not being distracted. These are the four cases where the wrong choice shows through the thing on top, and all four are decided before you are dressed rather than after.
A fine knit
Nothing moulded
Knit follows what is beneath it, so a contour cup prints its own edge through the fabric and reads from across a room. An unlined bralette has no edge to print.
A low back
The neckline decides it
The one case where what goes underneath has to be chosen before the dress is zipped rather than after. A standard band sits above the opening, and there is no fixing that on the night.
Anything white or pale
Skin tone, not white
White under white is visible; a shade close to your own is not. The instinct is exactly backwards, and it is the most common thing that goes wrong.
A slip or a bias cut
Seamless — and check it sitting down
Bias fabric shows every line, including the ones that only appear when you sit. A standing mirror check passes and the evening does not.
