Night serum vs BHA exfoliant

They are not competitors and they are not interchangeable. A BHA exfoliant is an acid that clears the pore and lifts dead surface — it is a step you can overdo, and doing it nightly is the usual reason skin becomes sensitised. A repair serum is a leave-on treatment meant for every night. If you can only run one, run the serum nightly and add the acid two or three times a week; that order is the whole answer and it is the reverse of how most people buy them.

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum

Estée Lauder

Advanced Night Repair serum

Anyone building one nightly step and keeping it

Pros

  • A leave-on serum meant for nightly use rather than a treatment to schedule
  • Sits under anything, so it does not rearrange a routine
  • The longest-running product of its kind, which is why it is the reference point

Cons

  • It does not exfoliate, so it will not clear a congested pore
  • A serum is a slow instrument — nothing about it is visible next morning

Paula's Choice

Skin Perfecting 2% BHA liquid exfoliant

Congested pores, texture, and anyone whose skin feels rough rather than dry

Pros

  • Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it goes into the pore rather than over it
  • A liquid rather than a scrub — no abrasion involved
  • Fragrance-free, which matters in a product that is already an irritant

Cons

  • Overused it sensitises skin, and 'overused' is closer to nightly than people expect
  • An acid needs sunscreen behind it, which is a second commitment

The order that stops the acid from backfiring

Acid on the nights you use it, serum on all of them. Skin that has been exfoliated too often reads as sensitive, tight and reactive, and the usual response is to add more products to calm it — which is the loop worth avoiding rather than treating.

Neither is a moisturiser

Both are steps that go under one. If skin feels tight after either, that is the missing cream talking, not a sign the product is wrong.
