New Year's Eve is the longest dressed night of the year — out before nine, still out at two, photographed at midnight, and quite possibly standing outside for part of it. Almost every regret about this night is a comfort problem rather than a taste one, which is why the useful question is not how to sparkle but where to put the sparkle so the rest can behave.

Put the shine where the camera is
At midnight everybody's hands go up — a glass, a phone, an embrace. That puts your wrists at the height of every lens in the room, which makes a line of crystal down the wrist the most efficient piece of shine you can own. It costs you nothing in comfort, it does not catch on anything, and it is doing its work in precisely the photograph you will keep.
The dress can then do something quieter. A print that reads as light from a distance gives you the effect of a sequin dress and survives being sat down in, which a sequin dress does not.
Two bright things is one too many
A bracelet and small earrings, not a bracelet and chandelier earrings. When two pieces are equally loud the eye stops on neither and the whole look reads as effortful. One loud, one quiet is the pairing that looks styled — and on this night the loud one should be the piece that ends up above the table.
The night is longer than the outfit
Ankle straps, a platform under the toe, a bag on a wrist strap: all three are decisions about hour five rather than hour one. The most common New Year's Eve failure is shoes chosen for a photograph and abandoned in a corner by one in the morning, which leaves you barefoot on a floor that has had a night poured onto it.

- Do you have to wear sequins?
- No, and a full sequin dress is the outfit people most often regret. Sequins are heavy, they catch on tights, they are cold in a taxi and they are uncomfortable to sit in for four hours. Putting the shine on one carried or worn piece — a bracelet, a bag, a nail — gets the same effect from across a room and none of the problems.
- What actually photographs well at midnight?
- Light near the face and light on the hands, because those are the two things in every midnight photograph. A raised glass puts your wrist at eye level, which is why a bright bracelet outperforms a bright hem. Gloss on the mouth is the other one: flash flattens a matte lip and lifts a lit one.
- Is black boring on New Year's Eve?
- Black is the base that lets one bright thing read as deliberate. What is boring is black with nothing happening — no texture, no shine, no shape. A print that reads as light, or a plain dress with one crystal piece, both solve it. An all-over sparkle solves nothing because the eye has nowhere to land.
- What about the temperature problem?
- New Year's Eve is the one night people routinely dress for a room and spend an hour outside it — queues, taxis, a countdown in the cold. Sleeves are worth more than they look, and a coat you can actually stand to wear over the outfit matters more than the outfit. Plan the outdoor half of the night before the indoor half.
