The answer
Why is my face puffy in the morning?
Lying flat for eight hours lets fluid that gravity normally pulls down through the body settle in the loosest tissue you have -- and the loosest tissue on the whole body is the skin under the eyes. That is why the face is puffiest on waking and has usually settled by mid-morning: standing up drains it. So the useful interventions are the ones that reduce how much fluid pools overnight and how long it takes to leave, and the honest ranking puts an extra pillow and less salt at dinner above anything in a jar. What a cream does well is a smaller job done reliably: cooling and firming the surface so the settling happens faster.
What answers it
CeraVeEye Repair CreamThe morning one. Caffeine constricts the small vessels briefly, which is a real effect and a short one -- exactly right for a puffiness that was going to drain by eleven anyway.Buy on Amazon
LaneigeWater Sleeping MaskThe night before, which is where this is actually won. A face that goes to bed dehydrated holds water harder, and this is the step that stops the overnight moisture loss the puffiness follows.Buy on Amazon
Kiehl'sAvocado Eye TreatmentFor the case where waking up puffy has become waking up crepey. Heavier than the morning cream and meant for the other end of the day.Buy on Amazon

Sleep position is the biggest single lever
One extra pillow, so the head sits above the heart, changes how much fluid settles in the face at all -- and it costs nothing to test. Face-down sleepers get the worst of it, and often notice one side is puffier than the other, which is simply the side that was against the pillow. If you change one thing on this page, change this one, and give it three nights before judging.
Salt at dinner, alcohol at any time
Sodium pulls water into the tissue and alcohol does both -- it dehydrates, so the body holds harder onto what it has, and it dilates vessels so more fluid leaks out of them. A salty late dinner and two glasses of wine is the reliable recipe for a puffy face, and it is far more predictable than whether you slept seven hours or five.
Cold works, and it is not a scam
Cold constricts vessels and speeds drainage, which is the whole mechanism behind every chilled roller and spoon trick. It genuinely works and it genuinely does not last -- twenty minutes to an hour. Treat it as makeup rather than as treatment: something you do before a face is seen, not something that changes the face.
Questions
- Is puffiness the same as under-eye bags?
- No, and the difference decides whether anything will help. Puffiness is fluid: it is worst on waking, better by lunchtime, and worse after salt or alcohol. A bag is fat that has come forward through a weakened membrane -- it is there at every hour of the day and does not change with sleep. Fluid responds to everything on this page; a fat pad responds to none of it.
- Does drinking more water help or make it worse?
- Helps. Dehydration makes the body retain, so the intuition that water causes water retention is backwards. What causes it is salt with too little water, which is why the puffiest mornings follow the saltiest evenings.
- Do caffeine eye creams really work?
- For this specific complaint, yes, modestly and briefly. Caffeine constricts vessels and reduces the swollen look for an hour or two. It is worth using and it is not worth expecting anything from by the afternoon -- which is fine, because by the afternoon the puffiness has drained anyway.
- When is puffiness worth asking a doctor about?
- If it is new and persistent all day rather than fading by mid-morning, if it comes with puffy ankles, or if it arrived with a new medication. Facial swelling that does not follow the overnight pattern is not a skincare question.
