My lipstick is gone after one drink
Lip colour comes off in three ways: it transfers onto things, it slides off a lip that is too slippery for it, and it wears away from the middle where a glass touches. A balm applied right before colour causes the second problem — it is a lubricant. A liner over the whole lip, not just the outline, gives the colour something with grip to sit on. And a matte or transfer-resistant formula loses far less to a rim than a cream or a gloss does. Do the prep the night before rather than the minute before, and the same lipstick lasts a different evening.

Balm right before colour is the most common mistake
It is a reasonable instinct and it does the opposite of what you want. A balm's job is to sit on the surface and stay slippery, which is precisely the surface lipstick cannot hold on to. If lips need conditioning, do it hours earlier or overnight and blot before colour. Prepared lips are not the same as lubricated ones.
Blot, dust, repeat — the trick that actually works
Apply one thin coat, press once with a tissue, and apply a second thin coat. Two thin layers with the excess removed between them hold far better than one thick one, because what leaves on a glass is mostly the top of a thick layer. Some people dust translucent powder through the tissue between coats; that helps matte formulas and can look dry on creams.
Drink past it, not through it
A straw is the unglamorous answer and it works. Failing that, the rim contact is what strips the centre, so a lipstick that has been blotted and lined will fade to a stain rather than to a gap. That fade is worth designing for: a colour close to your own lip tone disappears gracefully, and a colour far from it does not.

- Does setting spray work on lips?
- A little, and less than on foundation. It can also feel tight and taste unpleasant. Blotting between two thin coats does more for wear than spraying over one thick one.
- Is liquid lipstick always longer-wearing?
- Usually, because most are matte and drying by design. The trade is comfort and how they behave on dry patches — a liquid matte shows flaking that a cream hides. If your lips are dry, the overnight prep matters more than the formula.
- Why does it collect in the lines around my mouth?
- That is bleeding, and it is a different problem from wear. A liner around the edge gives the colour a wall to stop at, which is what liner was originally for. Creams and glosses bleed more than mattes because they stay fluid.
