The reason this question is hard the first time is that there is no dress code to look up and no one will tell you one. The honest answer is that the bar is low and the risk is social rather than sartorial: you want to look like you meant it, and you want to not spend the night pulling something down.

Jeans are the answer more often than anything else
If you take one thing from this: dark straight-leg jeans and a good top will be correct at the overwhelming majority of university parties. It is what most of the room is wearing, it survives a house with no heating, and it means you can sit on a floor without thinking about it. A going-out dress is not wrong, but it is a bigger swing, and in a flat rather than a venue it can leave you the most dressed person there.
Coverage is not the thing being measured
This comes up constantly and deserves a plain answer: nobody is scoring how much skin you show. Long sleeves, a high neck, jeans — none of these read as trying less. What reads as trying is fit and one deliberate detail: a top that actually fits, and earrings, or a chain, or a lip. That is the entire distance between clothes and an outfit.
The practical argument is stronger than the aesthetic one. Anything you have to keep adjusting — a strapless top, a short skirt you cannot sit in, a bag that slips off one shoulder — costs you attention all night. A bodysuit does not ride up. A crossbody does not slide. Those two choices remove most of the fidgeting.
The four practical decisions
- Shoes flat or low. Hours of standing, wet floors, a possible walk home. Trainers are normal.
- A bag with a zip, worn across the body. This is the difference between your phone coming home and not.
- No coat you care about. Coats end up in a pile on a bed. The pile is where things disappear.
- Nothing that needs adjusting. If you have to hold it in place, it will own your evening.
When the party is themed
Themed parties are their own category and the theme is not optional — turning up unthemed reads as opting out of the room rather than as being above it. But the effort expected is low: one identifiable element is enough. If the theme is a decade, take the silhouette rather than the costume —the same logic that makes an all-black Halloween outfit work applies here.

- Jeans and a fitted long-sleeve top or bodysuit. This is not a compromise outfit — it is what a large share of the room is already wearing, and it reads as more considered than a going-out dress in most university settings. Coverage is not the thing anyone is measuring.
- Is it better to be overdressed or underdressed?
- Slightly underdressed, in this one setting. A university party is usually a house, a flat or a bar rather than a venue, and the person in a formal dress is more visible than the person in jeans. If it is a themed or formal event, that is a different occasion and the invitation will say so.
- What about shoes?
- Flat or low. You will stand for hours, floors get wet, and you may walk home. Trainers are entirely normal at most university parties; a low block heel is the highest you should go unless the event is formal.
- Do you bring a coat?
- Bring one you would not mind losing, or none. Coats at house parties end up in a pile on a bed, and the pile is where things disappear. This is the single most common first-party mistake.
